St. Patrick's Day - 7 Ways to be Greener on the Greenest Day of the Year

Did you know that the color of Saint Patrick was primarily Blue? St. Patrick's Day has come a long way from its original roots in Ireland. Especially in the United States where it has become a celebration of Irish American culture. St. Patrick's Day has been widely associated with the color green worldwide. The term "green" has recently become associated with eco-friendliness or being environmentally friendly in the recent years.

With all the emphasis on green for the upcoming holiday, we should take a minute to remember the importance of the new meaning we've assigned to "green". In addition to wearing green on that day, maybe we can act on being green as well. Take a few extra steps to help the Earth out a little bit. Here's a few tips you should consider. Most of them are simple and quite easy!

1. Recycle - About 70% of the trash in landfills and waste bins around the country are recyclable. Recycling Has so many benefits besides saving space in landfills.

2. Turn off unused electronics & lights - Save power by turning off your PC or Laptop when not in use. Turn off all lights for vacant rooms. This also will help keep the high cost of energy down.

3. Reuse - Don't throw away plastic bags or cardboard boxes, many trash items can be re-purposed and used for a variety of different uses.

4. Carpool - Sharing a ride not only saves you cash at the pump, but also reduces the number of vehicles on the road, reducing release of carbon emissions.

5. Use a fan - In some areas, the heat is picking up. Rather than cranking up the air conditioning, consider turning on a fan. Fans use a fraction of the energy an air conditioning unit uses. Plus, you can localize and direct the cooling rather than wasting precious cool air in vacant rooms.

6. Use recycled products - Many manufacturers and retailers are offering products made of recycled materials. Help reduce the need of manufacturing from new sources by buying products made of recycled materials. This can range from paper products to eco-friendly remanufactured toner cartridges, to apparel made from recycled plastics.

7. Ride a Bike - Cars are great, but a healthy and green alternative is riding a bicycle to your short-range destinations. Keep in shape while keeping green!
