September 16 is observed as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly on December 19, 1994 to commemorate the date 1987 on which nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substance that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Since then, states and different countries devote the 16th day of September to promote and start activities in accordance with the objectives and amendments of the Montreal Protocol.
What is International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer?
As it is stated earlier, the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated every year for us to acknowledge the importance of our ozone layer in protecting us from the harmful effects of the sun's UV rays and other substances from the outer space.
How did it all start?
In a United Nations General Assembly held way back in 1987, representatives from 24 different countries met in Montreal, discussed and announced to the world that it was time to stop and reduce activities that are causing harm to our earth's ozone layer. Upon this act, the 24 countries committed themselves through the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer to work together in order to rid the world of substances that threaten the ozone layer.
The Theme for this year's International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
According to UN's official site, this year's theme will be "Protecting our atmosphere for generations to come." The theme "emphasises the extraordinary collaboration and environmental benefits achieved by the world's governments through the operation of the Montreal Protocol".
With joined efforts and perseverance to lessen the substances especially those that omit HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons) and other greenhouse gases that adds up to the global warming problems, the United Nations still firmly believe that we will able to save our ozone layer from further damaging, protecting the future of the next generations to come.
"On this International for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, I congratulate all who have made the Montreal Protocol such an outstanding example of international cooperation. And I urge Governments and all partners to apply the same spirit to the other great environment and development challenges of our times. Together, we can achieve the future we want." was the message of UN's secretary for the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer this year.
For more information, you can go to UN's official website and print their written articles there but of course, don't forget to use remanufactured toner cartridges or remanufactured inkjet cartridges to make sure you help in protecting our environment. These are recycled cartridges and help benefit the environment from further use of its raw materials especially plastic and oil.
