September - Biodiversity Month

Most people don't know that the month of September is celebrated as "Biodiversity Month". In this month, we observe the importance of protecting our environment, its wildlife and how we should take some actions to conserve it. Biodiversity itself is what measures the health of the ecosystem. It is what tells us if our environment is balance and support our daily needs as well including the quality of air, the natural purification of our water resources even our climate.

What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity or biological diversity is defined as the "web of life" or the "variety of plants, animals and other living organisms, their physical structures, genes, DNAs and they're part in our ecosystem." As it was stated, every one of us plays a very important role in our environment. And every living thing that exists is a part of it, no matter how large or how small it is such as bacteria or fungi—if one specie extinct then an imbalance in our ecosystem happens.

But why is biodiversity important?
Biodiversity is our ecosystem itself, it what surrounds us, its what makes you and I alive this very moment. It’s where we depend our needs, sustenance and health. The nature, foods, medicines and raw materials are all a part of the planet's biological diversity. This also includes the basis of our tourism and recreation, and what makes natural processes in the nature possible such as the production of oxygen and clean water.

How can one help protect in the conservation and protection of our biodiversity?
One can help in protecting and conserving our biodiversity by following these simple steps:

  • Start composing in your garden.
  • Practice the 3Rs of being environmentally responsibly: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
  • Join campaigns and activities that mainly helps the conservation of our environment and protecting our wildlife.
  • Separate non-biodegradable and biodegradable wastes.
  • Create a simple and little habitat on your background for those little birds that visits every now and then, take care of some small plants as well.
  • Use recycled materials in your everyday life. As for example, when it comes to your office or home printers, you can try using remanufactured printer cartridges. This act can help you weigh down the use of raw or natural materials.
