"I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." - Albert Einstein
11 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the 6th day of November as International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. Upon taking such action, the United Nations wants to impart and educate everyone about the effects and damages that wars and armed conflicts caused to our environment.
As what Benjamin Franklin said, "There never was a good war or a bad peace", wars and army conflicts never brought anything good. For what pacifist and many of us may believe, in wars, no one wins, both parties lose. Lives are sacrificed, houses are destroyed and beliefs are contorted, leaving the idea of peace to the mind of those who were involved as nothing more than a fiction. Wars and army conflicts also brought severe damage to our environment, agriculture lands are devastated, water sources are contaminated, and forests are burned down. That's why for people to be familiarize to these damaging effects, the United Nations asked every one of us to take part each year in observing the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict.
"We must recognize peace and security as a critical “fourth dimension” of sustainable development. We must also acknowledge that durable peace and post-conflict development depend on environmental protection and good governance of natural resources." was the message of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.
The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict gives way for pacifists, diplomats, government officials and peace advocates held seminars, lectures, meetings and activities that gather people together for them to learn about the horrifying effects wars especially armed weapons can cause to our environment and the effects it can cause us as well.
